Introduction
Audix Systems design and supply complete engineered rack solutions for Public Address and life safety Voice Alarm systems. These systems may include background music, voice evacuation and emergency messaging requirements and meet RASTI or CIS speech intelligibility specifications. The data sheets and manuals below provide a general overview of the most commonly used components within the 19" rack equipment. For over 60 years Audix Systems have been at the forefront of Public Address and Voice Alarm development. This accumulated expertise is reflected in projects undertaken in some of the worlds most prestigious and demanding environments.

Inputs
Audix offers a range of standard and purpose built microphones. Generally these units may include a number of the following options:
  • Desk, wall or equipment rack mounting.
  • Single button unit (PTT press to talk) using switched pair to Alpha via external pre-amplifier.
  • Multi-button units (8,16,32 buttons) using Alpha serial data link, complete with built-in microphone pre-amplifiers.
  • Microphone buttons can be configured to route any source on a system to any destination, via the Alpha configuration suite, allowing maximum system flexibility. Microphone pre-amplifiers feature built -in pre-announcement chime, digital audio compressor/limiter and line monitoring.
  • Background Music Selectors allow zone selection without PTT and microphone. Buttons can be configured to control selection and routing of pre-recorded messages within the Alpha system or from an external source.

Matrix Control
 

The Alpha matrix utilises digital control of analogue audio to provide a 12-input, 16-output matrix incorporating up to 3 message cards with up to 10 messages with a total 180 seconds of high quality digital audio per card.

Minimal controls, accessed with a password, allow the user to set volume, bass and treble. All parameters (including microphone controls, signal routing, priority settings and fault monitoring) can be programmed by non-technical staff using a re-configuration package.

The majority of controls are accessed via an LCD front panel using 4 buttons and a thumb wheel.

Signal Processing
On systems requiring optimisation for meeting intelligibility requirements, or on Pro-sound installations Audix can supply equalisation. Typically each channel requiring equalisation will be fitted with a 30 band 1/3 octave equaliser. Where the equalisation is fitted on a Voice Alarm System a bypass unit must also be fitted to bypass the EQ on mains failure.

Amplification
The CPA240 power amplifier provides up to four channels of amplification for both Public Address and Voice Alarm applications.

The 100-Volt line output stages are robustly designed and are protected against open circuits and loads that exceed the channel’s rated power, including short circuits. A thermal shutdown circuit provides further protection of the amplifier’s output stages.

A link matrix located within the amplifier allows the selection of a single ‘zone/destination’ from the ribbon bus to each amplifier channel i.e. an amplifier channel may be configured to any one output of the switching matrix.


Selector switches within the amplifier chassis set the master or slave configuration of each channel amplifier providing a range of power settings:

4 x 60 Watt
1 x 120 Watt & 2 x 60 Watt
2 x 120 Watt
1 x 180 Watt & 1 x 60 Watt
1 x 240 Watt

Paralleling amplifier chassis is achieved by connecting the parallel output on the auxiliary port to the slave amplifiers. The volume control of the ‘master’ amplifier overrides the volume controls of the paralleled slaves.

VA Fault Monitoring
Audix offers the opportunity to monitor the audio path of Public Address and Voice Alarm systems.

This monitoring is carried out using the Fault Monitoring System or ‘FMS’ system using a single “Master” FMS frame and additional “Slave” frames. The FMS system offers a wide range of monitoring options:

Audio path
Serial data link
Control contacts
Amplifier
Mains and battery supplies

Voice Alarm Systems that comply with BS5839 require all of the above to be monitored on critical paths and components. Critical paths are those paths through the Voice Alarm System that rely on equipment and the connections between them to achieve a Voice Alarm broadcast.

As the Alpha forms a major part of the signal control and routing, it is a critical component and therefore requires monitoring. The Alpha can also be configured to perform monitoring on other critical paths and components connected to it.

Each Voice Alarm System that is to comply to BS5839 part 8 and other standards requires to be specifically designed to achieve that end.

Product Summary - Bypass Unit

A rack mounted Bypass unit (V32eBPU) is available. If the Alpha matrix should fail, live announcements can still be made. To make an announcement turn the key on the front panel clockwise. The bypass indication will illuminate. Any microphone connected to the bypass unit will then be able to make a call to ALL zones.

Product Summary - Standby Battery System

The Standby Battery Systems (SBS) are primarily designed for use with Voice Alarm Systems requiring battery backup to comply with BS 5839 part 8. The standby battery units are designed to provide a self-contained 24V DC supply that can be exactly tailored to provide the standby supply capability required. They are provided in standard 19” rack frames and three standard capacities, each in a 3U chassis. Up to 4 Individually fused protected outputs for amplifiers are available on each battery unit. Dual 24AH battery units incorporate 2 separate chargers. The 48AH battery units maintain similar performance with a double capacity charger unit.
